16. Missouri Tigers

Year: 2016 (Home)

Final score: Tennessee wins 63-37

It’s crazy to think that Tennessee football never faced the Missouri Tigers before they joined SEC play in 2012. After all, the two states border each other, and the Vols had played every other state school bordering them by 1927, six years before the formation of the league.

But Mizzou joined the league at the worst time for UT, so they own a 5-2 advantage in the series. The Vols’ only two wins came when the Tigers were rebuilding, in 2015 and 2016, missing a bowl game both years and transitioning from Barry Odom to Gary Pinkel.

Of those, the 2016 game was certainly more memorable. It was Senior Day for the Vols and most notably Joshua Dobbs. But the game started in very bittersweet fashion, as UT fans had learned that the Florida Gators clinched the SEC East right as their game started.

Dobbs managed to take that out on the Tigers that day, putting together a historic offensive performance. He had one of his memorable five total touchdowns performances with three passing and two rushing, and he also threw for 223 years and rushed for 190 to gain over 400 total yards on the day.

The offense as a whole racked up over 600 total yards and scored eight touchdowns. Jonathan Kongbo added a ninth with a pick-six for good measure. This historic offensive performance made it the more memorable of the two wins, but neither really stands out in UT lore.
