The Tennessee Vols place in the final 2018-2019 Directors’ Cup standings leads our Volunteers news for Friday, June 28, 2019.

It’s the last Friday in June, and the college sports season has officially drawn to a close for the 2018-2019 academic school year. In fact, that’s a big part of what we’re talking about today in news surrounding the Tennessee Vols.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with where UT finished in the Directors’ Cup. For the first time in a while, this is actually a bit of good news and gives off some encouraging signs for the future. Maybe an athletic director change in 2017 had something to do with it?

Anyway, in addition to that, we also have a former Lady Vol helping to break ground in men’s basketball with a few other people. And finally, we have a story involving the SEC leadership council meeting they have every year and which UT athletes will be going. But let’s start with the big news.

UT finishes in top 25 of Directors’ Cup standings – NACDA.com

The Tennessee Vols finished No. 25 in the 2018-2019 Directors’ Cup standings with a total of 797.75 points. It’s their highest finish in eight years and the No. 8 ranked finish among SEC schools. This was a jump from No. 35 last year and No. 46 the year before that.

"The Stanford Cardinal secured its 25th overall Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup back on June 12 and finished 2018-19 with 1567.75 total points after the College World Series. The Cardinal scored in 18 of 19 possible sports, led by six national championships, four on the women’s side (volleyball, swimming, tennis, water polo) and two men’s titles (gymnastics, golf)."

Kara Lawson hired as Celtics assistant – Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN.com

The Boston Celtics are hiring former Tennessee Lady Vols guard Kara Lawson as an assistant coach. Lawson has been an analyst in various roles with the NBA for 12 years, and she joins Becky Hammon of the San Antonio Spurs, Jenny Boucek of the Dallas Mavericks and Lindsay Gottlieb of the Cleveland Cavaliers as the women assistants on NBA benches.

"Lawson had talked to several NBA teams about on-court coaching roles in recent years, but the chance to work with coach Brad Stevens and with the Celtics organization convinced her and her agent, CAA’s Bret Just, to accept an offer on Thursday, league sources said. Lawson is well-regarded for a playing career that included three trips to the Final Four under legendary coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee, and 12 seasons as a point guard in the WNBA."

Football offensive lineman Ryan Johnson, swimmer Madison Graham, women’s basketball player Kamera Harris and men’s basketball player John Fulkerson will be in Birmingham, Ala. this weekend for the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meetings. The event lasts two days, and representatives talk about their experiences as SEC athletes and the ways the conference can support them.

"The meeting will begin with an open discussion with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on Friday followed by a presentation on leadership and perseverance by Thaddeus Bullard, WWE’s Titus O’Neil. Dr. Rob Bell, certified sports psychologist and SEC alum will meet with the group on Saturday, and the six Leadership Council chairs and vice chairs will provide an update from SEC Spring Meetings."
