Top elite prospects for Vols at receiver

Rakim Jarrett; 5-star (*Committed to LSU Tigers)

6’0″ 195 lbs; Washington, D.C.; St. John’s College High School

We don’t cover recruits committed elsewhere on these evaluations unless there’s a major exception, and Rakim Jarrett is a major exception. A five-star from the nation’s capital, Jarrett is committed to the LSU Tigers. But numerous reports now say he’s likely to decommit and decide between the Vols, Ohio State Buckeyes and Maryland Terrapins.

Ohio State is the favorite by a majority on the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions to land him with UT in second place, but lead expert Steve Wiltfong actually has him going to Rocky Top. So Jeremy Pruitt could be in position for a major coup here. Jarrett is a top 20 player nationally and the No. 2 receiver, and he could play wideout or slot receiver. So he’s the perfect guy for Jim Chaney.

Darin Turner; 4-star

6’3″ 195 lbs; Memphis, Tenn.; Central High School

He hasn’t narrowed down his list, but the Vols need to go after a top-notch wideout, and Darin Turner as a four-star in-state prospect is the perfect guy. Listed as an athlete, he is the No. 10 player nationally at his position, and at 6’3″ 195 pounds, he’s the perfect guy to help offset the loss of the wideouts that is coming.

Add in the fact that he’s from Memphis, and Turner should be the No. 1 target. The early Rivals FanFutureCast has UT as the top school to land him, but we can’t be sure of that yet. What’s clear is that the Vols should not let him get away, even as no schools have made any cut yet.

Bryce Gowdy; 4-star

6’2″ 190 lbs; Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Deerfield Beach High School

Jeremy Pruitt has beefed up his Florida pipeline, and Bryce Gowdy is another wideout he could go for. Sure, he’s not an in-state guy, and there’s no favorite to land him yet, but the Vols are among the top 6 teams to land him.

Gowdy is the No. 40 ranked player at his position and the No. 31 ranked player in the state of Florida, and he’s the No. 220 player nationally. UT is competing with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Syracuse Orange, West Virginia Mountaineers, Oregon Ducks and Penn State Nittany Lions to land him.

Rome Odunze; 4-star

6’3″ 183 lbs; Las Vegas, Nev.; Bishop Gorman High School

Again, there’s no favorite for this guy. But Tennessee football is in the top 5 for Rome Odunze and the only school not from out West in the running, which has to say something. The Vols are competing with the Oregon Ducks, UCLA Bruins, UNLV Runnin’ Rebels and Washington Huskies to land him.

Odunze is not ranked nationally on Rivals as an overall player, but he is a top 60 guy at his position and the No. 2 ranked player in Nevada. And as another 6’3″ four-star, he again is a perfect prospect at wideout.
