Nobody has built up a program in Tennessee Vols athletics quite like Ralph and Karen Weekly have done with softball, and they continued their success this season. It was actually a below average year for them overall.

And given the fact that the Weeklys were in their 18th season, those two things kept us from moving them higher on this list. But in terms of accomplishments, softball still stood out over many athletic programs.

Tennessee went 43-17 on the year and finished second in the SEC. They also made it to the NCAA Super Regionals, even if they missed out on the College World Series. Such a track record is incredible when you consider that a bit of a down year.

But even that down year against the backdrop of so many seasons at the helm is enough for us to say that they belong in the top 6 on this list. Tennessee softball is rolling overall as a program, and that didn’t change.

Not having a standout record-breaking season isn’t enough to say they don’t belong at or near the top of this list for their performance. And by the way, this was a young team that will return 14 players next year. They were also an extra inning loss away from the Women’s CWS. So those things made this another great coaching performance.
