Brian Pensky was one of Dave Hart’s first moves as Tennessee Vols athletic director. Known for a long process to build a soccer program as he did with the Maryland Terrapins, Pensky took women’s soccer to another level.

This year, the soccer program made history by reaching its first ever Elite Eight appearance. Even if it was all the way in Pensky’s seventh year, that was a huge milestone, and it took the No. 1 ranked Stanford Cardinal to eliminate them.

Women’s soccer was the most accomplished sport overall this year on Rocky Top. Pensky oversaw a program that went 16-3-3 and finished second in the SEC. That postseason play put it over the top as the best sport. That 16-3-3 record also made for the best winning percentage the program ever had.

Yes, being in his seventh season is why we have him down on this list. But being down on this list, again, is only a reflection of how great of a job so many coaches did on Rocky Top this year. There’s no denying just how impressive Pensky was. The future of women’s soccer is in great hands if he stays on board, and Hart has to get credit for hiring him.
