10. Women’s basketball beats Texas 88-82

It was the worst season in history for the Tennessee Lady Vols, and that resulted in Holly Warlick getting fired. That was a very tough move given the fact that Warlick is peak Vol for Life. She was the first women’s basketball Vol to have her jersey retired and there for all eight of Pat Summitt’s national championships as an assistant.

But a six-game losing streak, the most embarrassing loss ever at home to the Vanderbilt Commodores, and an elimination on the first round of the NCAA Tournament, when they shouldn’t have gotten in to begin with were hard to ignore. So those are all the negative things.

On the positive side, however, the Lady Vols were off to a red-hot start. And part of that start was a thrilling win in December. After jumping out to 7-0, the highlight of the year was a win on the road against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.

On Sunday, Dec. 9, they traveled back to the Big 12 to take on the Texas Longhorns on the road. Ranked No. 12 in the country, Texas would be their first real test. And it what turned out to be a major tease for the year, the Lady Vols aced it.

Texas had a 23-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Holly Warlick’s team outscored them 26-12 in the second to go up at halftime. That was all they needed as they held on for the win. Part of this great day was a 33-point performance from Meme Jackson. UT would follow this up with a loss to the Stanford Cardinal, but on this day, they made it to 8-0 with a great road win.
