No.1 – Can Jarrett Guarantano have a Jonathan Crompton year?

Heading into 2009, Lane Kiffin’s first season as head coach of the Vols, there was a lot of chatter about Jonathan Crompton. Could he turn a corner and be “the guy?” Or was Tennessee going to get the same Crompton from his junior season that saw four touchdowns with five interceptions?

Offensive coordinator, Jim Chaney came on board the 2009 season and Crompton as a massive improvement. Chaney drew up plays to feed into Crompton’s skills, and it worked.

Crompton threw for 27 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. Under Chaney’s play calling the senior quarterback had a 58.3 percent completion percentage with 2800 yards passing.

Could Jarrett Guarantano be next?

To be fair, Guarantano has put up better number through two seasons than Crompton did in his first three. But, there is still room for improvement.

Pruitt will undoubtedly be asked the question, and I think the easy and right answer will be “yes Guarantano can, and yes he will.”

Look for Pruitt to pump up his quarterback, and he isn’t wrong for doing so. Guarantano threw for 1,907 yards last season and getting to 2800 shouldn’t be a problem under Chaney.
