He may not have won any championships like Gus Malzahn, but Dan Mullen’s success in the SEC is incredible already. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are a program right there with the Kentucky Wildcats and Vanderbilt Commodores.
All Mullen did was take them to eight straight bowl games, three top 25 finishes and a No. 1 ranking down the stretch of 2014. Those are incredible accomplishments. Now, he’s back in Gainesville with the Florida Gators.
And after one year there, taking over a 4-7 team, he went 10-3 and finished in the top 10. Mullen is part of the Urban Meyer tree and the actual original architect of their spread offense. That offense usually takes off in Year Two.
Given what he’s already done at Florida in one year, it means Tennessee football had better watch out. Mullen was one of those home run hires from the start, and even without a championship, he has proven more than enough to reach the top 5 here. In fact, one thing John Currie got right was having Mullen at the top of his coaching search in 2017.
