Former Tennessee football defensive coordinator John Chavis is now a longtime SEC defensive legend, but he may have made a mistake when jumping ship to join Chad Morris. To this point, Morris is selling his success off of one winning season in three years with the SMU Mustangs and his reputation as an offensive genius with the Clemson Tigers.

However, Dabo Swinney’s Clemson success didn’t reach the level it’s at now until Morris left. In fact, Morris left after 2014. Clemson has won two national championships, four straight ACC titles and made four straight College Football Playoff appearances since he left. Simply put, Morris’s offensive mind is very unproven. And one 7-5 year at SMU shouldn’t validate it.

Then came last year, when the Arkansas Razorbacks were easily the worst team in the SEC by a long shot. Now, to be fair, Morris was installing his spread offense with a team that had been running a Big Ten style run-oriented offense for five years. So maybe he needs more time. But for now, he’s by far the worst coach in the SEC.
