The Tennessee Vols football team holding its first scrimmage of 2019 fall camp leads our Volunteers news for Monday, Aug. 12, 2019.

College football’s opening game is now less than two weeks away. On top of that, the Tennessee Vols opening game is less than three weeks away. So the fall sports are about to be in full swing, and everybody in Knoxville is excited about it.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with another major step towards UT football beginning its season. Jeremy Pruitt’s team practiced over the weekend and crossed a major threshold that happens every preseason on Sunday. We’ll recap all the events.

But to give you an idea of how close around the corner the fall sports are, we also have a story about another program on campus playing its first exhibition game Monday. We’ll close with a recap of swimmers at a major event. But let’s start with the football news.

With the season less than three weeks away, the Tennessee Vols football team continued to hold practices over the weekend during fall camp. Jeremy Pruitt’s team held a light practice on Saturday and then had its first scrimmage this preseason on Sunday.

"Tennessee was back on the practice field Saturday afternoon to prepare for its first full scrimmage of preseason camp. The Vols wore shells — helmets, shoulder pads and shorts — for a relatively brief practice Saturday afternoon at Haslam Field that allowed them to make their final preparations for their scheduled scrimmage on Sunday."

Coming off their best postseason run in school history, the Tennessee Lady Vols soccer team will begin preseason play for 2019 Monday night with a game at home against the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds. There’s a connection for this game since head coach Brian Pensky led the Maryland Terrapins for years before taking over at UT. Following this, the Lady Vols have an Orange and White scrimmage set for Saturday and then open the season Thursday, Aug. 22 against Fordham.

"Following a historic 2018 campaign that saw the Vols reach the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, Tennessee was tabbed 10th in the United Soccer Coaches preseason national poll released last week. It was the highest preseason ranking for UT in program history. The Vols are the highest ranked SEC program entering the 2019 season."

UT swimming racks up five medals at Pan American games – SwimSwam.com

Numerous Tennessee Vols swimmers had successful outings at the Pan American games. They racked up two gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals, while Swimming and Diving Director Matt Kredich helped lead Team USA’s men’s swimming team to 22 medals, nine of which were gold. Individual successes included Tess Cieplucha winning a gold medal for Team Canada, Meghan Small winning a silver and a bronze medal and Taylor Abbott winning another bronze for Team USA, and former Lady Vol Molly Hannis helping Team USA win gold in a relay race.

"All told, the United States swam its way to 44 medals over 5 days, including 21 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze. They retained their team trophy from the 2015 edition of these Games, where American reaped a far fewer 32 medals at that time."
