Jeremy Pruitt suspending Tennessee Vols cornerback Bryce Thompson and this week’s football depth chart lead our Volunteers news for Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019.

We’re in full game preview mode now for the Tennessee Vols, making it clear that college football is upon us. And that’s the focus of our Tuesday morning coverage, which is actually heavier on news than you might think.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with an update on the Bryce Thompson situation. We also have news about this week’s depth chart along with coverage of things Jeremy Pruitt said in speaking to the media Monday.

But after that, previews in other sports are big here as well. That includes two men’s golf and one women’s golf preseason poll along with a volleyball press conference. So fall sports are really beginning to take off. Let’s start with the football news.

Bryce Thompson suspended indefinitely – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

Following an arrest after an altercation with a woman in a dorm room this past Saturday, Tennessee Vols sophomore cornerback Bryce Thompson has been suspended indefinitely. Jeremy Pruitt released a statement on Monday, saying that he will be suspended while the process continues.

"Thompson and a woman got into an argument in Stokely Hall, according court records. Records show that Thompson told the woman, per witnesses, that he would “slap the (expletive) out of you” and that witnesses also told police they heard him threaten to “shoot up the school.”"

Vols projected starters unclear – Blake Toppmeyer, Knoxville News Sentinel

Even with a full spring practice and fall camp, the Tennessee Vols football team is not completely clear on a lot of starters. They were vague on that Monday.

"Tennessee released its first football depth chart of 2019 on Monday. The Vols will open the season Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU) against Georgia State at Neyland Stadium."

Jeremy Pruitt previews Georgia State – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Ahead of the Tennessee football opener against the Georgia State Panthers, Jeremy Pruitt spoke to the media Monday. Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“You look at our opponent this week in Georgia State, you know, a team very similar to us. You’ve got lots of players coming back on both sides of the ball. Shawn Elliott is a guy that I’ve coached against over the years at South Carolina. A fantastic offensive line coach. When you watch this team play, you see the same things that I’ve always seen going against his offensive line. They’re tough, they’re smart, they play hard. They’re very well coached.”"

Eve Rackham previews season – UT Daily Beacon

Tennessee volleyball head coach Eve Rackham held a press conference Monday ahead of the start of her team’s season, which is set for this Friday against the Illinois Fighting Illini. She talked about the expectations this year with her team being in the preseason top 25.

"“We just talked about this year- new group of kids, and we haven’t really gone into a lot of expectations or talked about the polls. I’m sure our kids see it in the media, but for us it’s about committing to the process of getting better every day and for this group to reach their potential.”"

Men’s golf in two top 20 preseason polls – UTSports

Two more polls came out Monday with the Tennessee Vols men’s golf team receiving recognition. They were No. 16 in the Golfweek Preseason Poll and came in at No. 18 in the Golf Channel Preseason Poll.

"This comes off the heels of Friday’s Golf Coaches Association of America rankings where Tennessee was receiving votes. Last season, the Vols spent much of the season ranked inside of the top 25 and have seven of the eight players who played in the lineup returning from last season."

Women’s golf ranked in preseason top 30 – Golfweek.com

After two team titles in 2018-2019 and advancing to their 14th NCAA Tournament, the Tennessee Lady Vols golf team came in at No. 28 in the Golfweek Preseason Poll for 2019-2020. Seven SEC teams were ahead of them.

"The 2019-20 college golf season is upon us, and with that comes Golfweek’s Division I Women’s Preseason rankings. One team appears to be absolutely loaded. Another is reloading as it aims to defend its national title. Duke won last year’s title, its seventh in program history, and the Blue Devils welcome a pair of USGA champs into the fold."
