Tennessee football report card: Grading the Vols in their win over Chattanooga
Coaching
Offensive Play-Calling: A
There may be some issues with Jim Chaney’s play-calling, and we may not have seen the best of it on Saturday. But if the goal was getting a big lead over the Chattanooga Mocs and then involving Tennessee football’s backups to get them some experience, Chaney aced that test. So we’re going to give him an A, even if he still has some things to work on.
Defensive Play-Calling: B+
Derrick Ansley pitched a shutout, for which he deserves a ton of credit. But at times, Chattanooga was able to move the ball. They just made too many mistakes. So Ansley still has some work to do in lining up his defensive line properly, and the unit as a whole has to get things right. Make no mistake, though, he still did a pretty good job. Again, you can’t complain about a shutout.
Overall Coaching Grade: B+
Jeremy Pruitt pulled Jarrett Guarantano a bit too early, and there still were a couple of mental lapses. But they have reduced dramatically, and the improvement continues to show. So Pruitt deserves credit for how the Vols looked in what we could gauge about them on Saturday. It reflect positively on him and the staff.
One telling sign in Pruitt’s favor is that this team was still excited to play despite its 0-2 start and the fact that they were facing an FCS program. Lots of excitement was on display on the field, and Pruitt deserves credit for that as a head coach. So he did a very good job on the day.
