They weren’t really that impressive against the Clemson Tigers, but the Texas A&M Aggies did cover. That’s their claim to fame in a 2-1 start to the season that included dominating wins over a bad Group of Five team and an FCS team while losing to the defending national champions. So at this point, we have no idea what to make of them.
As a result, they remain at No. 6 in our SEC Power Rankings. Some people want to move them up given how badly they dominated the Lamar Cardinals this past weekend, winning 62-3. But as we have already said, you don’t get points for blowing out an FCS school, no matter how much you win by.
So at this point, they remain just above the middle of the pack. But Jimbo Fisher does clearly have a balanced offense, and he was able to find depth over the weekend, which was good news for his program. Just because they lost to Clemson on the road doesn’t mean all is lost.
The SEC West is still in play. And right out of the gate, they get to prove if they’re ready to compete for it by facing the Auburn Tigers at home Saturday afternoon. A game between two top 25 teams to determine the early leader for the challenger to the Alabama Crimson Tide is just what the league needs. This matchup will help us gauge the Aggies.
