We could make a case for the Vanderbilt Commodores being in last place. They didn’t play last week after all, and they remain the only winless team in the conference. However, that’s a completely unfair assessment of Derek Mason’s team to this point. We’re not going to drop them in our SEC Power Rankings for not playing.
The fact is, Vanderbilt is 0-2 after playing two Power Five programs. There are multiple other teams on here who have not yet beat a Power Five schools, and after losing to two Group of Five schools, the Vols have no business moving ahead of Vandy just because they blew out an FCS team. So for now, they are second to last.
Still, one of this team’s losses was to the Georgia Bulldogs, who will blow over everybody. The ‘Dores are inexperienced on defense but have enough on offense to threaten some teams. Unfortunately for them, that won’t happen this weekend.
Up next for Vanderbilt is a home game against the LSU Tigers. So they will be 0-3. But then they have a five-game stretch to define their season. It starts with the Northern Illinois Huskies before they visit the Ole Miss Rebels, host the UNLV Rebels and Missouri Tigers, and then visit the South Carolina Gamecocks.
