Tennessee football: Five Vols to watch for at Florida Gators
Who else would be the most relied upon player for Tennessee football in this game? He would be none other than the playmaker, the guy who delivered the Vols their only victory over the Florida Gators since 2004 and the most clutch big-game performer on the team. We’re talking, of course, about Jauan Jennings.
In 2016, Jennings had the go-ahead touchdown reception as part of three catches for 111 yards overall. He was hurt in 2017 against Florida, and in 2018 he was still recovering from injury. So this is his first real chance since that 2016 season to make the impact he made then. And Rocky Top is calling for him.
As we said earlier, the Vols have to beat the Gators through the air given how good Florida’s rush defense is. But there are too many issues with Jarrett Guarantano’s slow-developing passes to rely on sophisticated routes. Jim Chaney needs to simply call plays for Jennings on hot routes and have Jennings torch people by being the ultimate gamer that he is.
Very few people in Tennessee football history have shown the impact in big games and big moments that Jennings have. If the Vols are to pull off this highly unlikely upset on Saturday, they need Jennings to continue doing that. And who knows? Maybe he’ll burst onto the national scene once again with a big performance.
