SEC Power Rankings following Week Five of 2019: Bye didn’t help Vols
Hey, the Vols didn’t lose. There were plenty of jokes on Twitter about them getting blown out by the bye week, though. Anyway, they are still 1-3 with no wins over an FBS school. Until they can get one of those, we’re keeping them in last place in our SEC Power Rankings. It’s even more embarrassing when you realize they have only played one Power Five school.
Simply put, UT is as far at the bottom of this list as a school could possibly be. Jeremy Pruitt’s second team has been an embarrassment so far, and since the last time we saw them was a 34-3 loss to the Florida Gators, there was clearly no way we would put them anywhere outside of here. This program is in serious trouble.
At this point, they have a quarterback controversy between Brian Maurer and Jarrett Guarantano. And maybe J.T. Shrout will get in on that. They also have been prone to mistake after mistake throughout the early part of the season, having trouble adjusting to the new staff. Finally, they have a brutal stretch coming up after the bye.
It starts with a sure loss at home this weekend to the Georgia Bulldogs. After that, though, they have the bellwether game to determine if they turned things around, hosting the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Then they visit the Alabama Crimson Tide, a sure loss, before hosting the South Carolina Gamecocks. A 2-2 stretch gets them back into a bowl hunt. But they have to beat MSU and S.C.
