Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols’ 35-13 loss at Alabama
5. This team has no quit.
Say what you want about the officiating, the penalties, the coaching and the mistakes by the quarterbacks, but Tennessee football was in this thing until the end. And they showed early on they wouldn’t give up.
The Vols had their first offensive drive stall and fell behind 7-0 early. Then they threw an interception on their second drive. How did they respond? Well, they came away with an end zone interception and returned it 50 yards to set up a tying score.
Then they fell behind 21-10 and cut it to one possession in the third quarter on a field goal drive with their backup quarterback. Sure, the Alabama Crimson Tide were down to their backup quarterback too, and that will dominate the headlines, but given the state of the Vols right now, this was worthy of praise.
After cutting it to 21-13, they got a third down stop only to see it kept alive by a penalty. Alabama scored a touchdown on that drive, but UT still kept fighting, and they drove toward the goal-line once again before the fumble return touchdown.
They may be 2-5 right now and 1-3 in the SEC, but these guys have a lot of fight in them. Leaders like Jauan Jennings make that happen, and it’s why they were able to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs last week. It will also play well down the stretch as they try to make a bowl game. So they deserve credit for that.
