Tennessee football: Photo gallery from Vols 35-13 loss at Alabama
After hanging tough with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee football left some decent memories. Here is a photo gallery from the UT Volunteers’ 35-13 loss.
They tied it up at seven and were only down by one score with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter. If you know anything about the state of Tennessee football, that’s worthy of celebrating when facing the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on the road.
Everybody will bring up Bama losing Tua Tagovailoa to injury, but the Vols lost their starting quarterback, Brian Maurer, to injury. And anybody who saw the game could tell that Jarrett Guarantano was a significant drop-off.
Anyway, the game provided signs of encouragement for Rocky Top. However long it lasts remains to be seen. But Jeremy Pruitt’s team is improving, and they showed it in this game. Here is a photo gallery from Tennessee football’s loss.
If you take away an inadvertent whistle, a holding penalty and an unnecessary roughness penalty, the Vols could have had the ball with the game tied at 21 late in the fourth quarter. That’s how tough they played Nick Saban’s team on the road.
Sure, they fell to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in the SEC. Saban moved to 19-0 against his former assistants and 2-0 against Pruitt himself. And Alabama, who moved to 7-0, extended its winning streak against Tennessee football to 13 games, the longest in the history of the series for either team. That’s all depressing for Rocky Top.
But Pruitt had a wreck of a program when he took over, and just staying competitive with this Alabama team for a little while was worthy of praise. We’re willing to give him that praise, despite what happened at the end of this game.
This team still has plenty of things to work on, but nobody can deny that it is significantly better than the team that loss to the Georgia State Panthers and BYU Cougars to open the season. Maybe Pruitt truly is building something.
