They have met every year since 1992, and even before that, Tennessee football and the South Carolina Gamecocks faced each other 10 times. So in the 37 meetings between the two schools, lots of heroes have been made.
As the Vols try to end a three-game losing streak to the program, which has been in place ever since Will Muschamp took over, they will be looking for new heroes to step up. With the quarterback situation in flux, we’re not sure who that will be.
But there’s plenty of history with players coming up big in this one, and often times they have engineered turnarounds for Tennessee football in this game against South Carolina, something UT is looking to do this year. Can it happen again?
Before they get set to meet on Saturday, we’re going to look back at history at some of these legendary performances by Vols. Most of them have come in wins, but a couple of players did have superb performances in losses.
Just to get out ahead of things, making one great play did not put anybody on this list. For instance, the Marquez North one-handed grab in 2013 or the Mose Phillips legendary run in 1992 would not put them on here alone. They had to have a solid all-around game.
There are plenty of players on Rocky Top who meet that criteria, though, and some of them predate South Carolina joining the SEC. Yes, we can go way back for this one, all the way to the Robert Neyland days.
