3. Three people can play quarterback on Rocky Top.

Wide receivers playing elite for Tennessee football meant somebody had to be getting them the ball. And the person getting them the ball was, well, changing over time. This might be the biggest story out of Rocky Top on a night in which they pulled off a huge upset and ended a frustrating losing streak to Will Muschamp that made no sense.

The Vols have three options at quarterback. Earlier in the week, it became clear that Brian Maurer would not be able to go. So JT Shrout and Jarrett Guarantano both played early, but Guarantano was the one who got the bulk of the action. With him behind center, the Vols built a 24-21 lead, and Guarantano completed 11-of-19 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

But on his touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings that put the Vols ahead for good, he was hit hard and knocked out of the game. In came JT Shrout. All Shrout did was throw a touchdown pass on the next drive to Marquez Callaway to put them up 31-21.

Then Shrout led a field goal drive to put the Vols up 34-21, and he finished the game completing seven of 11 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. So the redshirt freshman proved he could hold his own as well.

All of a sudden, Jeremy Pruitt has three options at quarterback. That’s a huge deal, and it should serve him and the Vols well down the stretch of the season. By the way, if everybody is hurt, Jennings was recruited as a quarterback, so he could always move over there.
