Three Tennessee Vols football players earning weekly SEC honors and a women’s basketball exhibition lead our Volunteers news for Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019.

The aftermath of a huge win over the South Carolina Gamecocks was continuing into Monday for the Tennessee Vols. They received tons of recognition from the SEC while some of them went on individual SEC shows.

All of this will be featured in our morning update on Rocky Top. Football news continues to dominate the day with awards, quotes from Jeremy Pruitt and Jauan Jennings, and announcements about game times next week.

However, women’s basketball tipping off is also a huge story, and we have two updates to bring you on that. It’s a pretty exciting time to be a part of UT athletics right now with everything going on. We also have a women’s golf update to bring you. But let’s start with the football news.

Trio of Vols earns weekly SEC honors – UTSports

Jauan Jennings, Daniel Bituli and Brandon Kennedy all earned SEC honors for their play in the Tennessee Vols football team’s 41-21 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks this past Saturday. It was the first time in 25 years they had players capture the conference’s offensive and defensive player of the week awards the same week.

"Jennings was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Kentucky’s Lynn Bowden Jr., while Bituli shared Defensive Player of the Week honors with LSU safety Jacoby Stevens. Additionally, redshirt senior center Brandon Kennedy was named Offensive Lineman of the Week"

Jeremy Pruitt meets with media – Ryan Callahan, GoVols247

On Monday, Jeremy Pruitt recapped the South Carolina Gamecocks win and began focusing on the UAB Blazers. Some major updates included that Brian Maurer would be back at practice, Jarrett Guarantano would be limited early this week but should be good to go on Saturday, and Darrell Taylor and Darnell Wright are day to day. Here’s a bit of what else he said.

"“We’ve got four games left. Man, we work really hard to get an opportunity to do this. I don’t know why anybody would not take advantage of the opportunity. As much time and effort as you put into something that you love to do, it’d be shame on us not to be ready to play on Saturday against a really good football team.”"

SEC Network shows bring on Jeremy Pruitt, Jauan JenningsSECSports.com

After the Tennessee Vols’ huge win over the South Carolina Gamecocks, Jeremy Pruitt and Jauan Jennings got some love on the SEC Network shows Monday. They discussed topics from bowl berths and how good they are to funny things like Jennings doing a Pruitt impression.

"Vols’ Jeremy Pruitt joins The Paul Finebaum Show to explain why he isn’t so much worried about a bowl game, but how his team can improve right now.…Tennessee’s Jauan Jennings joins the Thinking Out Loud crew and says if his team can play and execute that they can beat any team in the country."

Tennessee-Kentucky game time set – Dan Harralson, VolsWire.com

Back to back night games are on the horizon for Tennessee football with the UAB Blazers and Kentucky Wildcats. After Nov. 9, they will have had three night games in four weeks.

"Tennessee’s kickoff time for its Nov. 9 game at Kentucky has been announced. The Tennessee-Kentucky contest will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised by the SEC Network."

Women’s basketball ranked No. 25 in espnW poll – ESPN.com

Despite a 19-13 record and a first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament last year, the loss of three starters and four rotational players heading into this year, and the addition of a new head coach, the Tennessee Lady Vols still cracked the top 25 of the espnW’s preseason rankings. Charlie Creme, Graham Hays and Mechelle Voepel voted on the rankings, and UT came in at No. 25.

"Only two of the top six scorers from a year ago are back (leading scorer Evina Westbrook transferred to UConn). Junior Rennia Davis (14.9 PPG, 7.7 RPG) will be asked for even more production and Zaay Green (9.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG) might need to make big jump in her second season if Tennessee is to reestablish itself as an SEC contender."

Lady Vols to face Carson-Newman in exhibition – Gene Henley, Times Free Press

Kellie Harper will give Vol Nation their first look at her as head coach of the Tennessee women’s basketball program Tuesday, as the Lady Vols host the Carson-Newman Eagles in an exhibition matchup. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. E.T., and the game will be televised on SEC Network Plus.

"Not much is going to be gleaned in terms of tonight’s matchup. Tennessee has won 27 straight in this series, the previous five meetings by an average of 45.6 points. How will the Lady Vols defend? How well will they shoot? Do they have players who can create for others? Those are the questions that will start to be answered, but there won’t be much else to learn tonight as the Lady Vols shouldn’t be pressed."
