Tennessee football: Five takeaways from Vols 30-7 win vs. UAB
3. Quarterback controversy still has not been settled on Rocky Top.
This won’t go away. Jeremy Pruitt started JT Shrout in the first series of both halves, as we mentioned. Shrout also finished the game. But at the same time, Jarrett Guarantano got the bulk of the action. That happened despite his injury last week and the fact that he made a few key mistakes throughout the night in front of this homecoming audience.
In the game, Guarantano completed 13-of-21 passes for 147 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Shrout, meanwhile, completed three of six passes for 34 yards, showing a bit of promise in the process.
However, both made mistakes. As we said in the first paragraph, Guarantano made a few key ones. The most notable mistake was a pass that was intercepted in the red zone late in the first half with Tennessee football up 23-0. Guarantano tried to force it, and he blew a chance at points with the Vols set to get the ball back in the second half.
Another lesser mistake made by Guarantano was a late pass he threw to Jauan Jennings when Jennings was wide open down the sideline. Meanwhile, when Shrout came in, he threw a pass into double-coverage that was almost intercepted.
So both of these guys have issues, and there is legitimate reason to wonder what’s going on. Guarantano’s health could have had a factor, and Brian Maurer is clearly still hurt. But no questions, in general, were solved after this game.
