Kellie Harper begins her first year with the Tennessee Lady Vols at the East Tennessee State Buccaneers. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

A new era tips off for the Tennessee Lady Vols Tuesday night as they face off against an in-state opponent to open the 2019-2020 season. In a rare instance, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams open their season on the same day at the same time.

While the men open at Thompson-Boling Arena, the women will be just up the road in Johnson City, Tenn. to face the ETSU Bucs. This is Vol Nation’s first real look at the new identity of the program so adored on Rocky Top.

With first-year head coach Kellie Harper, the Tennessee Lady Vols have to replace three new starters and four new contributors this year. They will open the season trying offset the loss of Evina Westrbook, who led the team in scoring and assists but transferred to the UConn Huskies. Mimi Collins, a reserve forward, meanwhile, transferred to the Maryland Terrapins.

Other players they have to replace are Cheridene Green, who was last year’s starting center, and Meme Jackson, who was their three-point specialist. Both players graduated. Here is all the information you need for Tuesday’s game.

When: Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. ET

Where: Freedom Hall; Johnson City, Tenn.

TV: MyVLT (in Knoxville); WEMT FOX 39 (in Johnson City)

The Tennessee Lady Vols enter the season outside of the top 25 in both polls, but there will be plenty of chances on the year for them to move up. Harper’s new-look team will likely rely heavily on Rennia Davis, the wing player who was last year’s co-leading scorer with Westbrook. Zaay Green, a five-star from last year who averaged over nine and a half points a game, is another returning starter.

Multiple returning contributors, the return to health of Lou Brown, a junior college transfer and a class of four freshmen headlined by five-star Jordan Horston will be tasked with leading this team into the new era. This is their first major test.

ETSU enters its seventh season under head coach Brittney Ezell. They return their two leading scorers from a team that went 10-21 last year, but they lost three of their five starters. Playing this game at home will be a big opportunity for them to show how much, if at all, they have been able to develop. UT will have a lot to prove as well, which should make this interesting.
