Kellie Harper has her first home game with the Tennessee Lady Vols Thursday. The women’s basketball Volunteers host the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears.

After surviving the East Tennessee State University Buccaneers 72-68 in their season-opener on the road in Johnson City Tuesday night, the Tennessee Lady Vols have a quick turnaround as they return home for their opener at Thompson-Boling Arena Thursday. They will face Central Arkansas in the season-opener for the Sugar Bears.

Kellie Harper’s team nearly blew a 10-point lead against the ETSU Bucs with less than four minutes to go. Due to foul trouble, she had to go 10-deep into her rotation. But at least she was able to give her players more experience and more rest ahead of this matchup.

Still, the growing pains of a new head coach and three new starters were clear. Tennessee Lady Vols fans are hoping that’s not a trend, and Thursday night is a chance for the team to show that. Here is all the information you need for the game.

UCA is entering its eighth season under head coach Sandra Rushing, who is in her 30th year of coaching overall. They are coming off a year in which they went 12-18 and 6-12 in the Southland Conference, and they lost Kamry Orr, their leading scorer from a year ago and the only player who averaged double-figures.

However, they do return Taylor Sells and Hannah Langhi, who were second and third on the team in scoring, along with Alana Canady, who started 11 games last year. So there is some experience on this team, and the Tennessee Lady Vols will have to handle that.

With only three players on the team over 6’0″ and nobody over 6’2″, UT has a major height advantage in this game. After three of the four post players scored in double-figures the other night, the other one had nine rebounds and two of them had double-doubles, Harper will likely want to exploit that advantage.

Provided they are able to stay out of foul trouble and stretch the court with improved three-point shooting, that would be their recipe to control this game from start to finish. They need to prove they are much better than what they showed Tuesday.
