Tennessee football Smokey points: Top five Vols in 17-13 Kentucky win
All season long, Jauan Jennings has stood out at wide receiver more than Marquez Callaway. That was to be expected, as Jennings was supposed to be the No. 1 receiver. But anytime Callaway did get recognition on this list, Jennings got it as well. And there were other times Jennings got it by himself. Finally, Callaway earns recognition as the top receiver.
For the game, Callaway had four receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. Callaway’s first catch was a 34-yard gain late in the first half that should have gone for more, but the refs did not call a blatant face mask on the tackle when his helmet was ripped. Still, he took it to another level in the second half.
On the opening drive of that half, he had a 33-yard gain to get into Kentucky Wildcats territory. Then, after a touchdown pass to Dominick Wood-Anderson was called back due to a penalty, Callaway made sure it would be irrelevant. He caught a 17-yard touchdown pass on a fade pattern, simply winning the one-on-one battle, to cut UK’s lead to 13-10.
Another 19-yard catch by Callaway on the next drive helped Tennessee football score again to take the lead. So three of his catches had a hand in two touchdowns drives, as one of them actually was a touchdown. Simply put, Callaway was the star receiver, and the Vols don’t win without him. So he clearly makes the list.
