Tennessee football: 10 players most responsible for Vols 2019 turnaround
He had a crucial mistake with a fumble against the Kentucky Wildcats that almost cost Tennessee football the game. And Tim Jordan’s standout game was the most critical of the two, as he scored a touchdown and had a key third down conversion to help the Vols get things going to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
However, while he hasn’t been the elite playmaker he was last year, Ty Chandler has still be reliable. And he was the workhorse against Mississippi State anyway. Chandler averaged under four yards a carry that day, but with MSU stacking the box and Jim Chaney relying solely on the run, he still got 63 yards and kept numerous drives alive.
Then Chandler was the guy nobody talked about forcing the South Carolina Gamecocks to sell out and let the Vols throw it all over them. After all, he had 16 carries for 78 yards. Finally, against the UAB Blazers, he had 16 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown and added two receptions for 14 yards en route to a 30-7 victory.
Simply put, despite not being flashy, Chandler has consistently been a reliable go-to player for Chaney while the Vols struggled to sort out their quarterback issues. As a result, we have to put him on here as a guy responsible for the turnaround. He has been too good for the offense to not make the list.
