Ahead of the final rounds of the Emerald Coast Classic, Tennessee basketball will host the Chattanooga Mocs. Here is our preview for the Volunteers.

Now up to No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll, Tennessee basketball has one more game before heading to Niceville, Fla. for the post-Thanksgiving rounds of the Emerald Coast Classic tournament. And now they know they will be a top 20 team in those games.

Anyway, Five days after beating the Alabama State Hornets 76-41 in the first round of the on-campus portion of the tournament, Rick Barnes’s team is back in action at home again as the Vols take on the Chattanooga Mocs. At 4-0, UT will look to move to 5-0 ahead of their trip to Florida.

This is technically the second round and final game of the on-campus portion of the tournament for the Vols. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s home matchup against an in-state foe.

Looking for his first winning season in his third year as head coach of Chattanooga, Lamont Paris leads the Mocs into Knoxville with a 3-2 record. Their losses are both on the road, at the Eastern Kentucky Colonels and at the Florida State Seminoles. However, they have key wins over the Tennessee State Tigers, South Alabama Jaguars and Troy Trojans.

So this team looks to be much improved from the one that went 12-20 last year and 10-23 the year before. However, it’s still hard to gauge them, as all three of their top scorers transferred this past year, and they were replaced by incoming transfer Matt Ryan.

Guard David Jean-Baptiste is the team’s leader in scoring with 16.4 points a game, while Ryan is second on the team with 15.4 points a game. Ramon Vila, who is second on the team in rebounding with just over five and a half boards a game while averaging over nine points a game, joins Jean-Baptiste as the only two returning starters.

Simply put, it’s hard to measure this team just yet. However, Tennessee basketball needs to be ready. This team is young and already scored a major quality win by beating the Washington Huskies. They need to stay ahead of the curve by running the table against lesser teams.

If they are able to do that, Barnes’s kids will be playing with a bit of house money when they travel to Florida. After all, they’ll be undefeated and in the top 20 with a quality win in what is supposed to be a rebuilding year. But they need to make sure they do indeed win.
