Okay, so here we got with the most unlikely of upsets. But in order for five SEC teams to make New Year’s Six bowl games to open the door for Tennessee football to make the Citrus Bowl, the Big 12 has to have some teams eliminated from contention as well. And one way to assure that is the Baylor Bears losing this game.
Right now, Baylor has one loss, and it is against the Oklahoma Sooners. It’s not a bad loss, but they have no quality wins. So the focus for them right now is winning out and finding a way to rebound in the Big 12 championship game. The goal for Vol fans, however, should be for the Big 12 to only get one team into those bowl games.
That’s where this game comes in. Does Les Miles have another rabbit to pull out of his hat? His team is 3-8. However, back in 2001, his first year as a head coach, his Oklahoma State Cowboys had three wins and were facing a one-loss Oklahoma Sooners team the last week of the season. And they pulled off a huge upset.
The win seemingly helped the Vols at the time, as they propelled to No. 2 just over a week later. Obviously, UT is in a dramatically different situation now. But to make the Citrus Bowl, which is what this is about, they need Miles to pull off another miracle.
