Returning from the Emerald Coast Classic, men’s Tennessee basketball hosts the Florida A&M Rattlers. Here is our preview for the Volunteers.

December ball is in full swing on Rocky Top. After dropping just a few spots in the top 25 but remaining in there, Tennessee basketball is back at home from the Emerald Coast Classic final rounds, a trip that produced mixed results.

The Vols lost their first game of the year to the Florida State Seminoles but then beat the VCU Rams, another top 25 team, in a thrilling buzzer beater. That explained why they were able to remain in both rankings.

Now, after returning from Florida, they host a team from Florida. The Florida A&M Rattlers come to town to tipoff the month, which will be their last game for 10 days. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s Wednesday night matchup.

While ranked No. 21 in the AP Poll, UT is No. 20 in the Coaches Poll. Coming off their 10-day rest after this game, they will resume their rivalry with the Memphis Tigers, this time facing them in Thompson-Boling Arena.

Florida A&M is 0-6 under third-year head coach by Robert McCullum, and they have had to replace last year’s leading scorer in Justin Ravenel. They are also coming off a 12-19 season, and five of their six losses have been by double-digits.

However, to be fair, four of their six games were on the road, and the two others were at neutral courts. Also, three of those four road games were against Power Five teams, and Wednesday will be another such road game.

Simply put, this team hasn’t run from competition. That could benefit them in the long run. Until then, though, their record does not benefit Tennessee basketball’s strength of schedule by playing this game.

But being able to play this game and then have a 10-day rest will allow the Vols time to get healthy. Lamonte Turner has been a bit banged up ever since the season began, and some young guys still need to develop. So provided the Vols do what they should on Wednesday, an upcoming rest will be welcome.
