And now we get to teams Tennessee football needs to see knocked out in order to make the top 25. Unfortunately for Rocky Top, they do involve a couple of teams the Vols actually played. However, given their records, these teams winning would make it a hard sell for UT to be above them without controversy.
As a result, this is where Vol fans have to root against teams they played, even if it hurt their strength of schedule. The first of these is the Georgia State Panthers. Obviously, GSU beat the Vols 38-30 to open the season in Knoxville in a shocking upset that nearly wrecked Jeremy Pruitt’s second year on Rocky Top.
Well, GSU is 7-5. So if they win over the Wyoming Cowboys and the Vols beat the Indiana Hoosiers, both teams will be 8-5 with GSU having a head-to-head advantage. Now, that doesn’t mean anything at this point. UT would still stay ahead of Georgia State in a quest to finish in the top 25 given their schedules. However, doing that would not be without controversy.
Vol fans should want to see their team finish in the top 25 without any controversy whatsoever. As a result, they should root for the 7-5 Wyoming Cowboys in this game. Wyoming would also then finish 8-5, but they would not have beaten Rocky Top, so the nod would go to the Vols is they beat the Indiana Hoosiers. Wyoming is also supposed to win as a seven-point favorite.
