Recruiting started off hot for Tennessee football in the early signing period morning. Le’Neath Whitehead of Athens, Ga. picked the Volunteers for 2020.

Just as the early signing period geared up Wednesday morning, Tennessee football scored some good news. Right off the bat, the Vols secured a commitment from one of their top targets out of the state of Georgia.

Len’Neath Whitehead, an athlete out of Athens Academy in Athens, Ga., committed to Rocky Top. He ended up committing and signing his letter of intent on the spot, giving UT its 19th commitment for 2020.

A 6’2″ 232-pound prospect, Whitehead can play linebacker and running back, but is apparently looking to play running back specifically in college. He announced his commitment to Tennessee football during a live ceremony on periscope.

Although he is only a three-star on Rivals, Whitehead’s stock is rising. He is the No. 15 ranked athlete nationally and No. 46 ranked player in the state of Georgia. It’s also worth noting that his 247Sports Composite rating is a four-star.

If he sticks to running back, he would be the third in the 2020 class at the position and the second power back. That does fill a position of need for the Vols, who don’t have any true power backs on the roster at the moment.

So Whitehead could provide some real value. UT was fighting with the South Carolina Gamecocks to secure his commitment, making him a huge pickup for Jeremy Pruitt Wednesday morning. Here is a look at his highlight reel.

As you can see, the guy has incredibly agility and shiftiness. He uses his power to break tackles and move down the field, which is clearly something the Vols need in their backfield looking ahead toward the future.

Of course, Whitehead won’t be able to elude SEC defenders like that. And his breakaway speed is a bit of a question. Those things will have to be addressed if he wants to stick to playing running back for Pruitt. However, he’s still a great pickup and a great start to the early signing period for Tennessee football.
