It was not a pretty picture for the Tennessee Lady Vols when they lost to the Stanford Cardinal. Here are our women’s basketball Volunteers grades.

Well, maybe the Tennessee Lady Vols aren’t as good yet as we thought they were in Kellie Harper’s first season. After starting the year off red-hot and then scoring a huge road win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, they have started to slump a bit, and it dates back to a home loss to the Texas Longhorns in their six-game home stand.

Ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 24 in the Coaches Poll, they then lost on Wednesday night in blowout fashion to the Stanford Cardinal. Now yes, Stanford is ranked No. 1 and 10-0, but losing 78-51 served as a reality check that this program is still not back to the level that it is hoping to eventually get to, even with so much highly-rated talent.

Of course, the loss of Zaay Green hurt things tremendously, and she would have been very helpful in Saturday’s game. But it doesn’t matter. UT still got blown out, and a lot of things went wrong for them in the process. They have a lot of things they need to work on before their next game, the second of a two-game West Coast road trip, this time against the Portland State Vikings.

Before getting to that point, let’s look back at what plagued UT in this game. Mistakes were made all around, and it’s also true they just ran up against an elite program. Stanford never got on any major runs except for a few spurts, like a 10-0 run to end the first quarter. Mostly, though, they just consistently built on their dominance.

Still, there are a few things that the Lady Vols did in positive fashion en route to their blowout loss that dropped them to 8-2 and 2-1 on the road. And those things are worth bringing up. So let’s do it here. This is a look at our Tennessee Lady Vols report card following their 78-51 loss to the Stanford Cardinal.
