Starting forwards and centers

Lou Brown: C

She only played 16 minutes despite getting the start, but Lou Brown could have done a lot more for the Tennessee Lady Vols during those 16 minutes. After all, she only had three rebounds, and as a stretch-four player, she needs to have more than two assists. And she needs to do better than score no points and take only one shot attempt.

On the other hand, Brown’s defense was not as much of a problem as other people’s. Stanford’s starting forwards combined for just eight points, so things on that front were not nearly as bad as they could have been. Combine that with the fact that she didn’t play long enough to get into a rhythm, and we can give her a break with a C.

Tamari Key: D+

As a center with superstar talent, Tamari Key’s inability to rebound better and score at will is more unforgivable than Lou Brown’s. Given Stanford’s personnel, Brown could have trouble stretching the floor and winning on talent. But Key could have won on her height and dominance down low along, but she failed to come through on that front.

For the game, Key only had two points. She only had two rebounds, fewer than Brown. And her backup was more aggressive than she was. As a result, we have to give her a D+. Now, like Brown, she does get credit for what she did defensively. But Key should have been much more dominant under the basket, and it’s problematic that she wasn’t.

Overall frontcourt grade: C-

Size was one advantage UT had in this one. Their inability to take advantage of it was extremely problematic. However, the starters in the frontcourt weren’t too bad defensively, so they get at least a passing grade, albeit barely.
