Tennessee Lady Vols report card in 78-51 loss at No. 1 Stanford
Shooting: D+
- Three-point shooting: C+
Hey, they went five-of-19 from outside. That’s actually not terrible, so we were able to give it a C+. The only reason it’s not higher is because Rennia Davis was the only consistent shooter, going four-for-10 from beyond three.
- Midrange shooting: F
If you shoot 26.3 percent from three and then 27.8 percent overall, your midrange was terrible. Such was the case for the Tennessee Lady Vols, who shot an abysmal 15-of-53 from inside the three-point line. See why they lost?
- Free throw shooting: D+
When you’re playing a team like Stanford, if you are struggling, one way to make up for that is free throw shooting. UT didn’t get to the foul line enough, and when they did, they only hit six-of-11. That is far from good enough.
Rebounding: C+
- Offensive rebounding: B+
Given their size advantage, they needed this to be an A+ to win. But Tennessee still got 19 rebounds in the game, which is a major plus, and the frontcourt players off the bench brought in nine of them.
- Defensive rebounding: D+
While they snagged 19 rebounds, they allowed 15 offensive rebounds. That’s atrocious since they were the taller team. It’s also why Stanford outrebounded them 50-44, something they could not afford to let happen.
Defense: C
- Perimeter defense: C-
Stanford did show why they are so good by shooting 36.7 percent from three. But the guards combining for 53 points and having only 13 turnovers was pretty good. We give UT credit though since Stanford only had 14 assists to 13 turnovers. That’s why this grade wasn’t worse.
- Interior defense: C+
Again, interior defense wasn’t terrible. We give it a better grade than the perimeter defense, but that’s largely due to Stanford actually shooting the ball well from the outside. Still, only one frontcourt player had double-figures, and Stanford goes deep into its rotation.
Ball movement: D-
When you have 11 turnovers, you weren’t terrible. However, combining it with only seven assists is embarrassing. We don’t need anything else to prove that the Tennessee Lady Vols struggled moving the ball, and that’s due to poor point guard play.
Coaching: C
Kellie Harper’s not totally at fault for this. But her lack of focus on trying to dominate inside and using Jessie Rennie more to get some outside shooting were problematic in this one. So she shoulders some blame.
Overall fundamentals grade: C-
Although they did a lot of little things right, the Tennessee Lady Vols failed to stick to what advantages they have over everybody else in this one. They may not have won if they did that, but they could have avoided a 27-point loss.
