5. 2016 vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers
Joshua Dobbs fumble recovered by Jalen Hurd for a touchdown
No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers win 20-13 (OT)
Yes, this is a game that never should have come down to a crazy play. But when it comes to crazy plays, Tennessee football doesn’t have many that top what happened here. And the fact that it happened in the crucial moment of an overtime win means that it has to make the list, regardless of who it happened against.
UT came into this game ranked No. 9, as it was the season-opener in 2016, their first top 10 ranking since 2006 and their first top 10 preseason ranking since 2005. But the Appalachian State Mountaineers, known for upsetting teams with high expectations in season-openers, built a 13-3 lead in the second half.
The Vols eventually came back and got the game into overtime. But in overtime, on third and goal, Joshua Dobbs did not want to bring up a fourth and goal. So scrambling for a touchdown, he was nearly stopped on the one-yard line. As a result, he attempted to leap over ASU defenders for the score, but in the process, he fumbled the ball into the end zone.
In a scramble to recover the fumble, Jalen Hurd somehow managed to fall on it, giving the Vols a touchdown. They then stopped Appalachian State on defense for a 20-13 win. It was an ugly overtime win, but that play was crazy and amazing all at the same time. It began a string of close wins by the Vols to open that season.
