Tennessee basketball: Ranking all nine Vols NCAA Tournament wins in 2010s
9. Colgate Raiders (15-seed)
2019 – Second Round
Final score: Tennessee wins 77-70
It was an ugly win and a win over the worst team Tennessee basketball played this decade. As a result, we put it on the bottom of the list. However, the Vols still won this one and advanced, even if they received a scare throughout portions of the second half.
UT entered the NCAA Tournament in 2019 a bit disappointed. Despite being No. 1 for three weeks during the year, they finished second in the SEC regular season standings, runner-ups in the SEC Tournament and then a No. 2 seed in the Big Dance. So they just missed out on history in every way. But they still had a lot to pay for.
So Barnes’ veteran team built a 16-point lead in the first half. The problem, though, was Colgate was a team that could get red-hot shooting the ball. They did just that in the second half and took a 52-50 lead at one point. The game was tied at 52 at the 10-minute mark in the second half.
Rocky Top then managed to pull away for a 77-70 win. Colgate kept it close by shooting 15-of-29 from the three-point line, and Grant Williams had an off-day scoring the ball. However, Admiral Schofield did his part with 19 points, and UT was able to withstand that red-hot shooting for an ugly win to make it to the next round. Still, it was the least exciting win of the decade.
