4. Ohio Bobcats (14-seed)

2010 – Third Round (Second Round in 2010)

Final score: Tennessee wins 83-68

Similar to their win over the San Diego State Aztecs, this game counted as a second round game in 2010. However, for consistency, we are calling it a third round game since it’s the second game of the first weekend for teams who didn’t do a play-in game. It’s confusing, but it shows how much changed this decade in college basketball.

Anyway, after holding off San Diego State, a Tennessee basketball team that was a trendy pick to be upset in the first round of the tournament now had a clear path to the Sweet Sixteen. The Georgetown Hoyas were supposed to be the trendy pick to make a run in this bracket, but they were upset by the Ohio Bobcats in their first NCAA Tournament matchup.

That set the stage for this game between Tennessee and Ohio. The game was close early, as Ohio had a two-point lead eight minutes in, and the Vols were only up by one, 19-18, at the 10-minute mark. But then the pulled away in the second 10 minutes of the first half to take a 38-27 lead into halftime. Ohio cut it to five in the second half, but never really threatened.

UT won the game 83-68 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. In this one, J.P. Prince was the surprise scorer with 18 points, but Scotty Hopson added 17, and Cameron Tatum dropped 11 off the bench. All of those players came through in a big way, and winning to get to the next weekend puts this game up here.
