On the day of the Gator Bowl, the Tennessee Lady Vols make their SEC debut against the Mizzou Tigers. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

As they maintain spots in top 25 rankings, the Tennessee Lady Vols begin SEC play in Kellie Harper’s first year on the second day of 2020. UT will play host to the Missouri Tigers to tip things off Thursday night.

With their last outing being a dominant win over the Howard Bison, UT is holding firm at No. 22 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. They are the lowest ranked of six SEC teams in the top 25 of both polls.

At 10-2, they host a Mizzou team coming in with a 3-10 record on the day. This game was moved up two hours so it wouldn’t take place at the same time as Tennessee football’s Gator Bowl game. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ matchup.

Missouri Tigers at No. 22/23 Tennessee Lady Volunteers

When: Thursday, Jan. 2 at 5 p.m. ET

Where: Thompson-Boling Arena; Knoxville, Tenn.

TV: SEC Network Plus

Live stream: WatchESPN

Radio: Lady Vol Network; Tiger Network Radio

Listen online: UTSports; Mizzou Network

Led by 10th-year head coach Robin Pingeton, Mizzou returns only two starters from a team that went 24-11 last year. The attrition has made for disaster, as this team is on a four-game losing streak and has yet to beat a Power Five school, which is why they are 3-10.

However, some talent has shown at times. They did only lose to the Missouri State Lady Bears, who are also ranked in the top 25, by seven points on the road, and they took the Nebraska Cornhuskers to overtime while only losing to the New Mexico Lobos and Kansas City Roos by three points each.

Other losses were to the Northern Iowa Panthers by five points and the Illinois Fighting Illini by seven points, which was their most recent outing. Simply put, they are remaining competitive in games and could still pose a threat.

As a result, the Tennessee Lady Vols need to be careful. They could struggle against Mizzou if they are looking ahead. So far, their only losses are at home to the Texas Longhorns and at the No. 1 ranked Stanford Cardinal, but that loss to Stanford was a blowout. So they still clearly have lots of work to do to improve.
