Tennessee football: Photo gallery from Vols Gator Bowl win vs. Indiana
It was a very memorable way for Tennessee football to end the season. Here are some of the photos from the Volunteers’ 23-22 victory over the IU Hoosiers.
This is a game that defined the season for Tennessee football. How many times have the Vols fallen behind or surprisingly overcome some major obstacles to turn things around, whether it was in a game or within the scope of an entire year?
Well, it happened again on Thursday night. In the final game of the year, UT came back from being down 22-9 to beat the Indiana Hoosiers in the Gator Bowl 23-22 by scoring two touchdowns within a span of 30 seconds and recovering an onside kick in between.
That comeback left a lot of thrilling moments, and it’s the perfect way for the Vols to start off this decade, which they hope will be a lot better than the last decade. Let’s look back on it a bit here. This is a photo gallery from Tennessee football’s incredible comeback win over the Indiana Hoosiers in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.
Every element of obstacles Tennessee football overcame was on display here. The Vols started Jarrett Guarantano but benched him for Brian Maurer due to ineffective play. Guarantano then came back in and led the comeback.
On the other side, the defense had to make three late stands to win, and they came through on all of them. Then Brent Cimaglia was his automatic self, which ended up making a huge difference after Indiana missed an extra point.
Sure, there was a ton of rust that resulted in mistake after mistake. Everybody was ready to bail on this team after a pick-six by Guarantano extended Indiana’s lead from 10-6 to 16-6. But they kept fighting through all of it, and as a result, they got a huge comeback win.
It was the type of mental toughness on display that comes with a team that started the season 0-2 at home with two losses to Group of Five schools, then fell to 1-4 and then fell to 2-5 before winning out to finish 8-5. That this game was against an eight-win team only made it look better for Rocky Top.
