The Tennessee Vols football program entering offseason mode after their Gator Bowl win leads our Volunteers news for Monday, Jan. 6, 2020.

With the NFL Playoffs in full swing and the Tennessee Vols football season now coming to an end, we now begin our offseason coverage on the first Monday in January. Right out of the gate, there is indeed news related to the program.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with Jeremy Pruitt entering offseason mode in a Sunday interview. Part of that is the continual coverage of the search for a new position coach to replace the one who just left. There don’t appear to be as many vacancies as last year, but this one is still a big deal.

Along with the football news, we have postgame quotes from the men’s and women’s basketball programs, both of whom lost games over the weekend. We’ll close with a recap of a diving event. But let’s start with the football coaching news.

Jeremy Pruitt begins offseason talkThe Nation, WNML

In a Sunday radio interview, Tennessee Vols football head coach Jeremy Pruitt recapped the 2019 season on Rocky Top, which ended with a 23-22 Gator Bowl victory over the Indiana Hoosiers. Here is a bit of what he said about his 8-5 team and the offseason, which starts with finding a replacement for running backs coach David Johnson, who left for the Florida State Seminoles.

"“I think starting this offseason, there’s going to be two types of teams. There’s one type of team that’s going to dread the offseason, and there’s going to be another type that’s looking forward to it. Our guys are going to be a team that’s looking forward to it.”"

Rick Barnes discusses loss to LSU – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

With Santiago Vescovi making his debut, the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball program lost its SEC opener to the LSU Tigers at home 78-64 on Saturday. Here is a bit of what Rick Barnes said about the loss, which dropped his team to 8-5.

"“I still think we have a chance to be good basketball team, but we don’t have a lot of room for error. We cannot continue to give up 19 points in a game off turnovers. We have to make people work to score on us and can’t give up easy baskets, where we get the ball and deflect it or are too loose with the ball.”"

Kellie Harper recaps loss to Kentucky – UTSports

After winning their SEC opener over the Missouri Tigers, the No. 22/23 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols came up just short in an upset bid at the No. 13 ranked Kentucky Wildcats losing 80-76 to fall to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. Here is a bit of what Kellie Harper said about the loss.

"“I think we’ll look back and find just a handful of possessions that could have changed the outcome, and that’s going to be really disappointing because wins are hard to get, and when you have an opportunity, which we thought we did, then you’ve got to find a way to pull it out. Obviously, Kentucky did what they needed to do.”"
