Tennessee football 2019 recap: Vols top 15 plays of the season

Jauan Jennings 19-yard touchdown catch from Jarrett Guarantano

Tennessee Volunteers win 41-21

It was the play that put Tennessee football ahead for good against the South Carolina Gamecocks, and it signified a dramatic shift from when Jeremy Pruitt publicly came down on Jarrett Guarantano just a week earlier. The touchdown pass itself proved the physical abilities of both players who had possession of the ball on the play.

Down 21-17, the Vols had missed a field goal on their opening drive of the second half. But then they got a stop and started moving the ball down the field again. Getting down to the S.C. 15-yard line, Guarantano threw a pass to Princeton Fant that resulted in a four-yard loss. So with a 3rd and 14 brought up, a field goal again seemed like the best-case scenario.

However, Guarantano and Jauan Jennings had other ideas in mind. As he dropped back to pass, Guarantano took a brutal shot from a South Carolina defender. But he let the ball fly anyway, and in the back of the end zone, Jennings came down with hit. He held onto after taking a brutal hit himself to give UT a 21-17 lead.

The hit was rough enough to knock Guarantano out of the game. But it got Rocky Top going in the second half, and they pulled away for a dominant victory. This was the play that changed the game in that half, though. That’s why it had to make the list.
