Brian Maurer pass intercepted by Richard LeCounte

Tennessee Volunteer lose 43-14

After taking a 14-10 lead early, the Georgia Bulldogs had pulled ahead for a 29-14 lead on Tennessee football in the second half. Brent Cimaglia had missed his first field goal of the game, making Vols fans feel like any real chance of a comeback was over. However, they weren’t quitting, and that was a good sign.

The lack of quit, though, resulted in just more heartbreak. With a 1-3 record at the time and coming off a bye week, Jeremy Pruitt’s team fought hard and drove the ball in to Georgia territory with just over four and a half minutes left in the third quarter.

Brian Maurer got hurt on a play, so Jarrett Guarantano, who had been benched, came in and completed a pass to Dominick Wood-Anderson at one point, bringing up a 1st and 10 at the UGA 49. They had a real chance to cut this to a one-score game. Jim Chaney decided to take a deep shot with Maurer back in.

However, his pass was intercepted by Richard LeCounte and returned to the Georgia 22-yard line. As a result, UGA snuffed out what could have been a very good drive for the Vols to make this a respectable game.

Georgia did suffer a turnover on downs on the following drive, but UT still had no momentum after that stop, so they were forced to punt on their next offensive drive. This was the last thing a 1-3 team needed.
