A fierce rivalry is renewed between the Tennessee Lady Vols and the UConn Huskies. Here is our women’s basketball Volunteers preview.

For the first time in 13 years, the Tennessee Lady Vols and UConn Huskies will face off in a regular season matchup. The once fierce rivalry that dominated women’s college basketball is back, even as the programs are in completely different places.

Despite those different places, though, this is a top 25 matchup. Also, eight of the 13 national championships since the two last played have gone to one of these schools, even if that’s skewed with UConn winning six of them, all of which are more recent than Rocky Top’s most recent national titles.

Still, this is a game that matters to everybody. UConn leads the all-time series 13-9, and they will be heavily favored in this game. But it will still intrigue everybody. Here is all the information you need for the Tennessee Lady Vols’ matchup in the Basketball Hall of Fame Revival Series.

No. 23 Tennessee Lady Volunteers at No. 3/5 UConn Huskies

Where: XL Center; Hartford, Conn.

TV: ESPN

At 15-3 and ranked No. 23 in both polls, the Lady Vols come into this game with a lot to prove. They have no real quality wins yet, and the last time they played a top 10 team on the road, they were blown out. That was against the Stanford Cardinal.

UConn, meanwhile, is No. 3 in the AP Poll and No. 5 in the Coaches Poll. At 16-1, their only loss this season is to the Baylor Bears, who are ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll and No. 1 in the Coaches Poll. It’s worth noting, though, that while their strength of schedule has been significantly higher than UT’s, their only top 25 win is over the DePaul Blue Demons.

So while the rivalry renewed is the story, both teams have some things they are still trying to figure out. Another interesting part of this rivalry is it’s Geno Auriemma, a legend, now facing Kellie Harper, who is still trying to build her program her first year back at her alma mater. It’s not Auriemma vs. Pat Summitt this time.

Somehow winning this game would do wonders for the Tennessee Lady Vols and prove their worth as a program on the rise under Harper. Playing on the road, though, their main concern is not getting blown out right now. They return to SEC play Sunday with a home game against the LSU Tigers. But this game is all the talk for now.
