Tennessee football: Three star 2020 athlete Darion Williamson decommits from Vols
With National Signing Day approaching, Tennessee football lost a decommitment Monday. A three-star in-state athlete parted ways with the Volunteers.
He was the one commitment of the 2020 Tennessee football recruiting class who did not sign during the Early Signing Period. Now, three-star Brownsville, Tenn. athlete Darion Williamson has officially decommitted from the Vols.
Williamson, who stands at 6’3″ 190 pounds and comes out of Haywood High School, committed to Rocky Top back in July. His decision to decommit comes on the heels of a weekend in which he visited the Florida State Seminoles.
More visits are still in the works for Williamson, so things certainly remain up in the air. He could still end up going anywhere. But after his FSU visit, he confirmed his decommitment Monday afternoon on Twitter.
On paper, Williamson doesn’t seem like a huge loss. He was a three-star who didn’t play the last half of the 2019 season due to injury, and his decommitment didn’t drop Tennessee football’s No. 11 ranking on Rivals. The guy wasn’t even a top 30 player in his own state.
However, Williamson is a loss due to the need the Vols may have at wide receiver. Despite the fact that he could end up playing defense, Williamson has wideout size with his frame. UT clearly needs to rebuild its depth at wide receiver after losing key talent this past year.
As a result, the departure of Williamson leaves Jeremy Pruitt and Jim Chaney with more work to find quality talent. They still do have bodies, to be fair. But when things are so up in the air and so many people are unproven, a guy like Williamson could add some insurance.
With Williamson’s decommitment, the Vols now have a total of 21 in their 2020 class, and as we mentioned before, all of them have signed. However, with National Signing Day approaching, it will be interesting to see if Pruitt pulls of any heists the day of. Anything could be possible.
