Coming off a loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, Tennessee basketball visits the Mississippi State Bulldogs Saturday. Here is our preview for the Volunteers.

As they continue to struggle with consistency, Tennessee basketball is back on the road Saturday afternoon for a crucial SEC matchup. After their worst loss of the year, at home to a .500 team, on Tuesday, the Vols now have to face a team that is red-hot.

UT heads to Starkville to face Ben Howland’s Mississippi State Bulldogs. MSU is coming off a huge 78-71 road win at the Florida Gators. This is the first of a string of tough games for Rocky Top to truly test Rick Barnes’ program.

Both of these teams are fighting to get to the NCAA Tournament, so this could end up being a regular season game with huge implications. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

At 13-7 and 4-3 in the SEC, Mississippi State has gotten red-hot recently, winning four of five games. That will make them a very difficult out for the Vols, who are still trying to get into a rhythm after so many personnel changes.

One setback for UT is the fact that Josiah-Jordan James is apparently banged up again. Barnes said he tweaked his hip, which was injured early in the season. Combining that with Lamonte Turner having season-ending shoulder surgery, and the Vols have had the worst of luck when it comes to their combo guards this year.

After Mississippi State, Barnes and co. will visit the resurgent Alabama Crimson Tide. Then they return home to host the No. 13 ranked Kentucky Wildcats and the resurgent Arkansas Razorbacks. Following those four games, they visit the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Simply put, things are about to get very difficult for Tennessee basketball. Currently at 12-8 and 4-3 in the SEC, this stretch will make or break them. Getting healthy and the young players learning to deal with success will be key. We’ll see today if they are equipped to handle those things.
