5. Place-kicker

Heading into 2020, Tennessee football is set at place-kicker. The Vols have Brent Cimaglia back, and he will arguably be the best kicker in the SEC. After all, this guy only missed four field goals last year, and two were blocked while a third was a 49-yarder into the wind. So he won’t be a problem at all for the Vols provided he remains healthy.

However, beyond Cimaglia, UT has no proven place-kickers. Luke Lynn, Marshall Ware and Toby Wilson were all on the roster last year. Lynn and Ware should be redshirt freshmen in 2020 while Wilson should be a redshirt sophomore. However, none of these players were rated as recruits, so we have no idea what to make of them if they become kickers for the Vols.

Meanwhile, Cimaglia is going to be a senior. That means that Jeremy Pruitt has a ton of uncertainty surrounding the Vols beyond 2020 when it comes to place-kicking. It’s not the biggest deal in the world, as he does have options along with another year to find a kicker if he has to. But the fact of the matter is this could be concerning when it was such an advantage this year.

We have talked in the past about the dramatic difference kicking can make. Pruitt probably knows that given all the times the Alabama Crimson Tide have been let down by bad kicking. As a result, he could use a surprise kicker signing with the program on National Signing Day. If that doesn’t happen, he’ll need to make sure he’s set there in the future.
