This unit is low on the list for the opposite reason that the running backs unit is. It has quality talent, but in sheer numbers, it may not have been enough. However, the quality combined with the potential numbers pushes it ahead of the running backs for Tennessee football’s 2020 recruiting class.
The Vols just lost Nigel Warrior to graduation. Baylen Buchanan, Shawn Shamburger, Kenneth George Jr. and Theo Jackson will all be gone after 2020. So Jeremy Pruitt, despite securing a great secondary class in 2019, still had work to do. He didn’t fully accomplish things.
Now, Keshawn Lawrence and Doneiko slaughter are both four-star safeties, so they definitely provide future depth and value. And there is going to be plenty of quality talent to choose from among starters at this point. The problem is depth.
Dee Beckwith is almost certainly going to play wideout. Jimmy Holiday committed as a quarterback, and if he makes a transition, it will likely be to wide receiver. So the probability of either moving over to this side is low, meaning Pruitt only has two reliable pickups at the position. Their quality makes this an above average grade. He needed more, though.
