Tennessee football: Five most underrated recruits in Vols 2020 class
James Robinson and Javontez Spraggins were two large interior offensive linemen who were three-stars to commit to Tennessee football’s 2020 recruiting class. All signs point to Spraggins deserving a four-star rating, though. The guy has amazing size and is hailed for his incredible strength, and his fundamentals are actually already pretty solid.
Now, you can question his competition, playing at East St. Louis high School in Illinois. But his drawback appears to be that he’s a tweener as well. Spraggins’ weight ranges from 300 to 340 pounds, and at 6’3″, he could be in an awkward spot between a tackle and a guard despite being listed as an interior lineman. Honestly, Jeremy Pruitt’s history shows those things don’t matter.
Pruitt and Jim Chaney enough are flexible to move people around, and interior linemen are crucial to their system. Simply being an interior linemen appears to be what’s holding Spraggins’ recruiting rankings back if you look at how those are broken down.
The guy is a three-star across all services. But on Rivals, guard has the second fewest four-stars per starter outside of center among main positions. Meanwhile, on 247Sports, Spraggins is listed as a center, and that has the fewest four-stars per starter. All three interior line positions in general have the fewest four-stars per starter on both services beyond even tight end.
Simply put, Spraggins is underrated. Offensive line is obviously extremely deep this year, so it’s not likely that he makes his way into the rotation early on. But he certainly provides long-term vaue, and there’s a great chance he becomes a star.
