The men’s and women’s Tennessee Vols basketball coaches recapping their losses over the weekend lead our Volunteers news for Monday, Feb. 17, 2020.

Well, it was a rough weekend for the major Tennessee Vols sports. Both basketball programs took a huge hit in what were clearly big games, and they bring the athletics program into President’s Day amidst a very depressing mood.

Our morning update on Rocky Top is all about recaps, previews and updates from the weekend today, one day after the All-Star game. UT’s basketball programs will lead the way, making for a very somber mood.

However, there were some wins in baseball and softball, and track along with men’s and women’s golf bring some good news as well. So we have other things to get to. Let’s start, though, with the major events of the weekend.

Rick Barnes discusses South Carolina loss – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

In a crucial game with NCAA Tournament implications, the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks 63-61 Saturday with a couple of questionable calls in the process. UT fell to 14-11 and 6-6 in the SEC with the Vanderbilt Commodores up next, and S.C. improved to 16-9 and 8-4 in the SEC. Here’s a bit of what Rick Barnes said about the loss.

"“Hard-fought game as you would expect. They finished it and we didn’t. In those situations, you can’t turn the ball over and you have to get shots up. We didn’t do that.”"

Kellie Harper discusses Texas A&M loss – UTSports

Desperately looking for a second quality win, the Tennessee Lady Vols came up short against the No. 16 ranked Texas A&M Aggies Sunday 73-71. It was their fourth straight loss, dropping them to 17-8 and 7-5 in the SEC with the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road up next. A&M improved to 20-5 and 8-4 in the SEC. Here’s a bit of what Harper said about the loss.

"“I think after a close game you can pick up a stat sheet and find many areas that you could’ve won the game. It’s easy to do. The other side is, I’m proud of our effort. I thought it was one of our best games in terms of 40 minutes of effort. I think we can build on that. You’ve just got to clean up some of those stat sheet items. You’ve got to keep giving focus and effort like that and give yourself a chance.”"

Baseball Vols sweep Western Illinois – Louis Fernandez, WBIR

Tony Vitello’s third season as head coach of the Tennessee Vols baseball program started out with a bang. His team swept the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks at home, winning the first game 3-0, the second 19-0 and the third 23-4. Up next for them is a Tuesday home game against the Charlotte 49ers.

"Tennessee showed a tendency to go long this weekend: the Vols registered 6 home runs, averaging two dingers a game. Sophomore Austin Knight leads the way for Tennessee with two home runs this weekend. Keep an eye on junior Zach Daniels. After failing to register a hit on Friday, Daniels is batting .500 through three games with 5 runs, 8 total bases and 5 runs batted in."

Softball goes 3-1 in Mexico – UT Daily Beacon

After losing their exhibition to the Mexican National Team and then beating the Colorado State Rams to open the Puerto Vallarata College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Tennessee softball won two more games in the event. They beat the Utah Utes and the Cal Baptist Lancers but lost to the Texas Longhorns in between. Up next is the Tampa Tournament this weekend.

"On their second day in Puerto Vallarta, the No.12 Lady Vols (6-2) beat Utah, 8-4, but were shut out by the Texas Longhorns, 11-0, Friday night.…Tennessee finished off its time in Vallarta picking up a 5-2 win over California Baptist."
