After a heartbreaking loss at the South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee basketball hosts the Vanderbilt Commodores. Here is our Volunteers preview.

In their final regular season game against a team not in the NCAA Tournament hunt, Tennessee basketball will be looking to get back on track before a brutal stretch run to close out the season. The Vols need it after a tough loss on the road this past Saturday.

Coming off their two-point loss at the South Carolina Gamecocks, Rocky Top will host the Vanderbilt Commodores in a Tuesday evening matchup. The game is exactly one month after UT beat Vandy 66-45 in Nashville.

Big Orange Country heads into this game with a 14-11 record and a 6-6 SEC record, but Vol Nation is holding out hope for potentially reaching the NCAA Tournament bubble. Here is all the information you need for Tennessee basketball’s matchup.

Saturday’s loss at South Carolina involved some poor officiating, including a terrible charge call on John Fulkerson. However, 11 missed free throws and 20 turnovers were the story. With Josiah-Jordan James back, Rick Barnes’ team really needs to try to right the ship down the stretch. They have lost five of their last seven, despite winning two of their last four.

Vanderbilt comes in with a 9-16 record and 1-11 SEC record under first-year head coach Jerry Stackhouse. They have lost 12 of their last 13, including those 11 SEC losses, but they did shock the LSU Tigers for their only SEC win, so they can surprise people. Given the fact that the Vols lost at home to the Texas A&M Aggies, they need to be prepared for that.

After this game, the Vols begin a brutal stretch with three of their final five against top 25 teams and all five against top 50 RPI teams. That includes the No. 13 ranked Auburn Tigers twice, the No. 10 ranked Kentucky Wildcats on the road, a rematch with the Arkansas Razorbacks and a game against the Florida Gators. Both Arkansas and Florida will be on the road.

Simply put, Tennessee basketball has a really tough outing ahead. A a result, the Vols have to win this game just to stay afloat. After that, they’ll have a few opportunities to score big wins down the stretch and make their NCAA Tournament case. But if they lose this game, that case will be effectively dead.
